The tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD-COP10) was held in Nagoya in 2010 attracting much international interest. For biodiversity conservation to succeed, however, it is necessary to stress its economic necessity. Loss of ecosystem services means loss of business. In this symposium, we introduce a number of quantitative means of evaluating the influence, risks and benefits provided by ecosystem services plus case studies that show how they operates in the real world.
